The other day I was looking for a photo on my phone to show a friend. As I scrolled through my photos, she made the comment, “I feel like these are all my memories too.” And you know what? She was right.
We take photos when we’re having fun, at special occasions, when we’re hanging out with friends and family, and at numerous other times in our lives. The thing is, we’re almost always with other people. In a sense, our memories are their memories. But let me ask you this. When is the last time you’ve shared your photos?
I’ll be the first to admit that I love seeing photos that were taken at an event I was at, but I’m horrible at sharing any photos I took. To be completely honest, I usually suck at remembering to take photos. I know, I know… the irony is not lost on me.
A few years ago, I decided it was time to get all of my photos of friends and family off of my computer and into their lives. I went through all of the photos I had taken that year and uploaded them to galleries where everyone could download them. Looking through photos of friends and family from the past year was fun for me, but it also felt good to send them out into the world for others, people I care about, to look at and enjoy.
Last year I did the same thing and I’m planning on doing it again this year, and the next, and the next, and the next… It’s only been a few years now, but I’ll tell you two things I’ve learned… First, I’ve never wished that I’d taken less photos throughout the year. Second, photos are most definitely meant to be shared. So have fun and take photos, but please don’t let them sit unseen on your hard drive. Put the out into the world and let others enjoy them as well!
